Sofa Fabric Guide: Linen vs Velvet vs Leather vs Performance Weave for Wholesale
Fabric is the largest single material cost in a sofa — typically 30–40% of the ex-works price — and the choice directly impacts compression performance, customer satisfaction, and return rates.
Linen & Linen Blends: linen-polyester blend (60/40 or 70/30) retains linen hand-feel while adding crease resistance. Cost: €4–8/m for blended linen. Velvet & Chenille: polyester velvet compresses well and recovers with minimal marking. Cost: €5–10/m.
Performance Weave (Solution-Dyed Acrylic/Olefin/Polyester): originally developed for outdoor furniture, these fabrics have moved indoors. They compress excellently and recover with zero creasing. Cost: €8–18/m. Martindale: 40,000–100,000+. Best for: families-with-kids segments and contract/hospitality.
Compression Performance Summary: Performance Weave > Polyester Velvet > Linen Blend > Cotton Velvet > Pure Linen > Leather. Always compression-test a sample in your chosen fabric before committing to a production run.
