Compressed sofas are the one category where density is not optional: vacuum compression removes up to 75% of the air volume from the foam, so a low-density foam with a weak cell structure can crush permanently and never recover its shape.
Vacuum packing works by pulling air out of the foam's open cell structure. High-density foam has a strong, stable cell wall that survives this pressure and re-expands when the seal is opened. Low-density foam behaves like a weak sponge: it collapses under vacuum and may stay flat.
